Donovan Capital Group Partner LtGen Vince Stewart Quoted in Wall Street Journal on Racial Bias in Military
Excerpt from June 29, 2020 Wall Street Journal:
”Military Gears Up to Fight Racial Bias, a Longstanding Adversary - Black service members face obstacles in trying to reach the top-and even when they get there”
Retired Marine Lt. Gen. Vince Stewart, who served for nearly four decades and became the first black American to lead the Defense Intelligence Agency, never felt he could speak out about the discrimination that dogged his rise. The national discourse over Mr. Floyd drove him to share what he said once only stayed “inside the family.”
In an interview, Gen. Stewart said: “You had one image that was your work image, and the real you. I left Vince Stewart in the trunk of my car before I walked into the workplace. Because you didn’t bring it into the workplace.”
He wrestled with when to speak out. “If I had spoken up earlier, maybe I wouldn’t have been director of DIA, where my voice carries a little bit,” said Gen. Stewart, now chief executive of Stewart Global Solutions LLC, a consulting company. “I am torn about whether I should have spoken up earlier.”
